Description

An important double bench in finely carved and sculpted walnut, enriched by a deep and lustrous dark patina. The structure, conceived with a strong architectural and monumental character, features a long continuous seat surmounted by a high central balustrade backrest composed of evenly turned balusters and crowned by a carved rail decorated with a continuous frieze of rosettes enclosed within roundels. The ends are articulated by imposing carved elements with scrolling foliate volutes and zoomorphic terminals, further enriched by projecting anthropomorphic masks that lend the piece a pronounced sculptural and theatrical quality. The lateral uprights are surmounted by turned spherical finials, while the base rests on robust shaped supports terminating in carved ferine feet and decorated brackets. The work belongs to Tuscan production of the late 16th and early 17th century, a period in which ceremonial furniture intended for aristocratic residences developed a late Mannerist vocabulary distinguished by architectural balance, ornamental richness, and a strong sculptural presence. Carved heraldic devices appear on the sides, consisting of an eight-pointed star within a shield. Traditionally attributable to Sienese or Tuscan noble lineages.
