A George III silver-gilt punch bowl, Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp, London, 1785

The bowl features a rounded, slightly flared form resting on a decorated circular foot. Its entire surface is enriched with lavish repoussé and chased decoration, characterized by: exuberant floral motifs with blossoms in high relief that create depth and movement; rocaille cartouches and foliate scrolls that frame and rhythmically articulate the surface; and gilding applied both inside and out.

The partnership of Smith & Sharp is renowned for the exceptional quality of their workmanship and for their ability to integrate Rococo elements with the increasingly prevalent Neoclassical influences. Objects such as this bowl illustrate a moment of full artistic maturity in their production.

1. The Maker’s Mark: Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp
2. Britannia standing: A duty drawback mark (Britannia standing) was used on exported wares for which the duty could be reclaimed from 1 Dec 1784 to 24 Jul 1785
3. Leopard’s Head Crowned: City of London
4. The Date Letter: 1785
