Description
A sterling silver tea service George III, Philip Rundell, London, 1819–21
The service, comprising a teapot, sugar bowl and cream jug, displays classical and harmonious forms inspired by the Neoclassical taste. The bodies are bulbous and fluted, resting on moulded oval bases. The teapot is fitted with a wooden handle, attached to the main body with a highly detailed upper section modelled as a coiled serpent; the lower terminal of the handle features an unusual moulding in the form of a serpent’s head. The lid is finely worked with a turned finial, while the spout is elegantly shaped and enriched with ornamental detailing. The sugar bowl and cream jug, both with gilt interiors, exhibit consistent craftsmanship, with scroll handles, chased profiles and refined decoration.
