Work by the painter Johannes BUC (Bois-le-Duc, active in the second half of the 16th century), signed lower right “IOHANES BV(C)/PINXIT.”
The painting depicts one of the most celebrated miracles narrated in the Gospel of John (11, 38–44): Christ raising Lazarus from the dead.
At the center of the scene, Jesus, dressed in a pink tunic and an orange mantle, performs the gesture of blessing while Lazarus, still wrapped in his burial shrouds, rises from the tomb. Around them gathers a crowd of witnesses, including the apostles and the sisters Martha and Mary, recognizable by their expressive poses and emotionally charged faces.
The background reveals a soft, luminous landscape with classical architecture and a clear sky that creates a sense of spatial depth.
The dynamic composition, serpentine poses, and vibrant colors reflect the influence of Flemish Mannerism.
Johannes Buc was known as a painter and glass decorator in Bois-le-Duc, a city in North Brabant, today part of the Netherlands, but in the 16th century belonging to the Duchy of Brabant and culturally oriented toward Antwerp.
J. van Oudenhoven, Bois-le-Duc, 1670, p. 40, mentions him as a painter of quality who had no master and was perfectly capable of depicting the human figure.
The work shows the influence of Frans Floris and Lambert van Noort, and it is likely to date from before 1576.
