UNDER RESTORATION. This painting, attributed to the workshop of Lodovico Cardi, known as Cigoli, depicts a Deposition in oil on canvas. The subject, with this particular iconography, enjoyed great popularity and was repeatedly reproduced by Cigoli and his workshop, as noted by Bucci (1959 exhibition), Chappell, and Faranda. The present work is a replica of a painting of the same subject housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

The scene shows the body of Christ taken down from the cross, supported by Joseph of Arimathea, recognizable by his aged features, grey beard, and red turban. At the center, the Virgin Mary, wearing a dark mantle and a rose-colored tunic, inclines her head toward her dead son with a composed expression of grief, one hand directed toward the wound in his side. In the shadowed background, other figures can be discerned. At the lower left, near Christ’s outstretched hand, lies the crown of thorns, symbol of the Passion. The use of warm light and deep shadow highlights the faces and bodies in the foreground, imbuing the scene with a powerful emotional intensity.
