First paperback edition, first printing, with no space between “Taylor” and “1997” on the seventh line of the copyright page, and “1 wand” printed twice in the list under “Other Equipment” on p. 53. According to Errington, “both the hardback (A1(a)) and the paperback (A1(aa)) were published on the same day and neither has bibliographical priority.” Print run of 5,150 copies. Publisher’s pictorial wrappers illustrated by Thomas Taylor, with yellow, black, and white lettering, and a young wizard on the rear panel. Errington A1(aa).

Ink ownership signatures on the first leaf, a minor blue pen mark on p. 109 (not affecting the text), light marginal ink staining to the upper corner on pp. 152–181 and 213–end, including the rear cover (recto), original wrappers, creasing to the covers and spine, preserved in protective plastic film. Overall, a splendid copy.
